TWO GO MAD IN SUFFOLK
(AND THEN SOME!)
After months of planning……all right…..hours of planning, Bryan ‘Spock’ Dale and I finally set of on our quest to the East Anglian counties of Suffolk and Norfolk, in search of the video footage taken by Peter W.
The first port of call was the campsite, one that we had chosen at random from the Caravan Clubs’ 1998 catalogue. Believe it or not, it was a complete surprise for us when we eventually found the site, to see that it nestled along the perimeter fence of the famous Bentwaters USAF Base. Pretty spooky, eh?
The tent was erected and Bryan took to the outdoor life like a duck to metalwork and very soon it was decided to have a nose around the now ‘deserted’ base. Armed with my trusty video camera, tripod and 35 mm, we drove up to a part of the fence that looked the most attractive and set up the equipment. The sun was just on its way down as we started filming, giving the atmosphere we required for this first UFOMEK docUFOmentary. We noticed that Rendalsham forest, that surrounds the base, had been thinned out quite a lot, exposing most of the fence along the East Side. After completing the introduction, we drove around to the main gate and took some shots of a huge bunker that was surrounded by tall halogen spot lamps that were operational…..strange for a disused base. We pottered around for about 15 minutes and filmed some more of the main gate, when suddenly I noticed two other lights coming towards us along the ground, shaking as they came closer. It was at this point that I said to Bryan, "gosh! There’s someone coming!",…or words to that affect. Sure enough, I could see a jeep belting up along the inside of the fence in our direction, headlights blazing. "Run!" I shouted. "Why?" said Bryan.."I’ll tell you later, for now RUN!" I said. The emphasis on my last "RUN" spurned Bryan into a gazelle-like sprint. Never before have I seen such speed. Then I realised that I was in front of HIM!
It transpired that Bryan hadn’t seen the lights but decided it was preferable to run. He also remarked that as I was running with the tripod and camera, he couldn’t help likening the scene with something from the film ‘Zulu’, and was quietly chuckling to himself during our retreat, despite the fact he was hoping that he had remembered to pack several spare pairs of underpants, if you know what I mean!
We got to the car, and after having some difficulty in trying to fit a 4ft tripod through a 2ft door, we made a get away that Ronnie Biggs would have been proud of.
At the pub (which fell strangely quiet when we walked in), we attempted to replenish the lost fluid from our now recovering, but still slightly shaky bodies. Obviously there was still a security presence at the base. We called it a night and got our heads down.
At around 2.30 am, I woke up with a start. What had woken me up? It was pitch black. Suddenly I heard the loudest blood curdling scream ever, ‘SCREEEEEECCCHHH!!!’
Bentwaters Base
Whatever it was, it wasn’t human. Bryan was silent. I whispered, "Bryan, did you here that?" No answer. Again a little louder, "Did you hear that?" Still no answer. I leant over to shake him. Gulp!!! No Bryan! Where had he disappeared to? Again the chilling screech echoed through the forest. I eventually plucked up the courage to look out of the tent flap and towards the car. There tucked up in a duvet with his feet sticking out of the end was Bryan. In the morning, at 6.30 to be precise, we set off in the car to see if we could find another route that would take us nearer the base. We found one. There were many buildings at this particular site, and it was quite obviously deserted. After taking a few photos, we ventured back to the camp and decided to walk around the rest of the perimeter fence. On our way round, we saw air ducts to an underground working that was partially obscured by foliage. What it was for, I have no idea. The whole base takes up such a vast amount of the forest, it is hard to think of a reason why they should want such an amount of land.
We said goodbye to Bentwaters and Rendalsham Forest, and set off to Oulton Broad in Norfolk, the backdrop for much of the footage taken by David Spoor last year (1997). This was en route to meet up with David Dane and Peter W. later that day, a meeting we had been looking forward to for some time.
After something to eat at Oulton, we had a look around the area. It is quite built up and caters for those who like nothing better than to chug off down through the beautiful Norfolk Broads.
After checking in with David Dane, confirming times and places etc., we made our way to a small seaside village named Hopton-on-Sea. According to David Dane, this is another location where some interesting footage has been taken by Peter W, and David S.
Tob & Below:: MoD facility at Hopton-on-Sea.
After locating the area, we walked across a golf course and along a grassy cliff overlooking the misty coastline. About 400 yards away, we could see a single storey building, surrounded by a high fence. Curiosity got the better of us and we decided to investigate. As we drew closer, we had our suspicions confirmed. It was a MoD site that was, again, apparently deserted. There was a sign warning us that we may be prosecuted if we entered the area. At the front gates, there were two signs. One informed us that: 'A microwave hazard exists at heights over 3 meters above the ground within this site'. The other warned that no one should attempt to work 3 meters above ground level at the site without obtaining clearance from the Duty Engineering Officer. Interesting. There were no external aerials or power /telephone cables anywhere. The windows of the main building were boarded up, although the main entrance was still visible. Its entire glass faced front allowing restricted view to its interior. The most vulnerable part of the building had either been overlooked during the boarding process on closure, or it was left as it was to facilitate regular and continued entry? The site covers a couple of acres, much of which seems to be unused. Perhaps this points to there being some underground facility, possibly using radar etc.
We filmed the site and then continued our journey towards North Walsham and our meeting with David Dane and Peter W.
After lots of wrong turns and dead ends, we eventually found David's home, tucked away in the middle of nowhere in an idyllic setting. David (left), greeted us and led us into the house. Paintings adorned the walls of the quaint living room, some of which David was responsible for.
We chatted for a couple of hours, during which David told us that he had been a keen UFO researcher, and in the past had worked closely with Tim Good on a few cases. The main topic of this conversation was, of course, the remarkable video footage that had been taken by Peter and his friend, David Spoor. An 'entrepreneur' had lured David S. and his footage away some months previously, with an 'interest' in the footage. However, David Dane told us (quite rightly), that although he was still in possession of footage taken by David S., he was not at liberty to allow us to view it. A wise decision, I thought. There are people in this business that would like nothing more than to take legal action over such things. Sad though it is, it is a fact, and therefore, we didn't press the issue.
After a couple of hours, Peter arrived and we got chatting. He struck me as a level-headed individual who was sincere and was genuinely pleased that we had shown interest in his footage. They had had different reactions from various interested parties. These ranged from aghast to plain rude. For my own part, I was aghast at most of the footage.
We were shown a good few hours of footage (taken at night), that Peter had shot near his home. Most of these were of mysterious lights that were hovering in the sky,
changing colour, and being joined by others. One particular clip showed some very bright objects on the ground, behind a sparse hedge. The lights reminded me of those given off by an arc welder, so intense, they were almost blue. One could be forgiven for thinking they were headlights from a tractor, until one of them rose into the air and hovered above the other! The higher of the two then descended and seemed to merge with the lower light. The merged light then changed shape and became almost square in appearance. They continued backwards and forwards for many minutes.
Another clip showed a light sitting on the ground in the middle of a dark field. Suddenly, a searchlight emits a beam that scans the area around the main light. Furrows in the field are picked out by the searchlight, that rotates a full 360 degrees. Once again, the spectacle is shot from a distance. Peter explained that as he decided to get nearer the object, the light either disappeared or went out. When he retreated to his original position, the light reappeared! He reasoned that this must have been coincidence, and that if it wasn't, it meant that the spectacle must have some degree of intelligence.
Peter experimented with telepathy......now, I'm a 'nuts and bolts' Ufologist, and have my doubts on the authenticity of this kind of contact. However, the video seems to show some kind of communication between Peter and these craft. This was borne out in several segments where Peter is verbally asking these lights to go out, come on, change colour, increase and decrease in number....they were listening to his requests. I say requests as these performances must not be confused with commands that would be given to say, a puppy. This, says Peter, is "their way of letting ME know that they are capable of communication with whoever they choose". There are, however, rules. Peter is not allowed to go too close to any light or craft. On some occasions, he is not permitted to use his video camera. He is only allowed to witness sightings when told to, and then he must be alone. If anyone accompanies him to a site, it is only with 'Their' expressed permission.
We were deemed suitable, and were taken to the site. Nothing out of the ordinary was happening. It was cold, dark, and late. Peter apologised and said, "I'll ask them to do something for you...." he looked up and said, "please will you show Jerry and Bryan that you are here...", I must admit, I felt slightly silly at this point and was going to suggest we make our way home, when suddenly......."Look!" I shouted. Travelling at speed from East to West, was a bright light, passing directly in front of us at a high altitude. From experience, I knew that it wasn't a comet, meteor, plane, or a satellite. It was then I noticed I had goose bumps. Peter looked at us. We looked at him. We went back to his home and watched more astounding video...not yet seen...we promised to keep the content and locations to ourselves until the time was 'right'.
I know that this seems a little odd, and sometimes too convenient, but we saw the evidence that was put before us. It is very, very convincing, and I believe that Peter and David have something here that is so complex, so unimaginably deep, that it could very well culminate into something that we may all be part of.
That was our weekend in Suffolk and Norfolk. I don't think we'll forget it in a hurry!
